Southfield— City Administrator James Scharret, who worked for Southfield for nearly 40 years, died today, the city said in a news release.
Scharret joined the city Dec. 10, 1974, as a research analyst and steadily moved up in the ranks. He became director of management and budget in 1982, deputy city administrator/fiscal services director in November 2004 and acting city administrator in November 2006.
Scharret was appointed to the permanent post in January 2008. Deputy City Administrator Fred Zorn is overseeing daily operations under the direction of the City Council, according to the news release.
Scharret earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in public administration from Central Michigan University.
Funeral arrangements are pending, the city said.
