Michigan vendors part of Buyers Market in Philadelphia
Twenty-one Michigan vendors will descend on Philadelphia for this weekend’s Buyers Market of American Craft, a wholesale market for authentic American designed home décor, jewelry, accessories, giftware and more. Axiom Glass from Detroit — which makes hand-crafted glass bowls, flowers and accent pieces — will be there, along with Ferndale’s Whistling Frog Tile Company and Ann Arbor’s Motawi Tileworks. The letter “A” tile (right) is from Whistling Frog’s new line of alphabet/monogram tiles inspired by fonts by the 19th century English artist William Morris, says owner Rick Pruckler. The show runs Saturday to Tuesday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Red Cross offers tips to prevent water pipes from freezing this winter
The polar vortex may be a distant memory now (until the gas bill arrives — ouch!), but I’m sure I wasn’t the only one worried about frozen pipes last week. If temperatures seriously plunge again, below are some good tips from the American Red Cross to prevent your pipes from freezing this winter:
■Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, basement storage closets or other areas where water pipes are located to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
■Keep a very small trickle of cold water running through your pipes to help prevent water line freeze-up.
■Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
■Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
