Detroit— Even before the North American International Auto Show opened up Saturday morning for the first public day of the show, the line to get inside extended through Cobo Center.
The return of the show brought crowds of thousands curious about concept cars and searching out that next model to buy.
Each of the Big Three’s displays were drawing plenty of attention. Lots of excited fans crowded the show to catch a glimpse of their future vehicles.
“I’m buying this one,” said Steve Bogic, of St. Clair Shores, who had made a beeline for the new aluminum Ford F150 as soon as he arrived. “As soon as I saw the Atlas (truck concept) last year, I knew I wanted one. This truck is going to be in my garage by this time next year.”
A lifelong fan of Ford and the son of a Ford retiree, Bogic says he will always be loyal to the brand.
“The little trucks aren’t that much in demand,” he said of General Motor’s 2015 Canyon, the automaker’s mid-size truck reveal at the show. “They’re going to get blown away this year.”
Over at the Chrysler display Dave and Patricia Brewer of Toledo were sitting in the automaker’s latest offering, the Chrysler 200.
“It’s really comfy, like sitting in a recliner,” said Patricia Brewer, who drives a Dodge Avenger.
“I love it,” said Dave Brewer, who works at the Toledo Jeep plant, but had never seen the mid-size sedan in person. “It’s a little different shape and size but I think this is a game changer.”
Although he’s unwilling to give up his RAM truck, Brewer said he’d definitely trade in the Avenger.
“This is one of the reasons I came up here to the show,” he said. “To see this.”
Drawing the biggest crowd early on in the day was the 625-horsepower 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
Nino D’Alessandro, of Troy, and his son Antonio, 9, were taking photos of the ‘Vette before the crowds got too thick. D’Alessandro used to have a Corvette, but traded it in when his son was born. Now, he’s ready for another.
“It’s great to see it in person,” said D’Alessandro, who said he knew he was going to buy this model as soon as he saw last year’s Stingray. “This is the one I’ve been waiting for.”
