Allendale, Mich. — A sharply worded editorial about donors in the campus newspaper caught the attention of officials at Grand Valley State University.
Two officials sent a letter to the editor, saying student journalists should return scholarships if they don’t appreciate donors who have given money to the western Michigan school.
Matt McLogan and Karen Loth said the newspaper was “ignorant.”
It’s a reaction to a December editorial in the Lanthorn. The newspaper said it’s time that GVSU “stop prostituting ourselves to corporate sponsors” after reporters found at least 31 campus rooms named after corporations.
Editor Lizzy Balboa tells MLive.com that she found the letter intimidating and a threat to free speech. GVSU says free speech is not the issue. It says officials simply disagreed with the editorial.
