Derek Murphy and Kenny Goins combined for 50 points and 23 rebounds Wednesday night, helping Warren Mott overcome an early double-digit deficit and outlast Grosse Pointe North for a vital 85-84 overtime road win in the Macomb Area Conference White Division.
Murphy, a 6-foot-5 junior, led Mott (5-3, 2-1) with 29 points and 11 rebounds, and 6-8 senior Goins had 21 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Vondale Kelley added 12 points and eight assists and Stef Johnson scored 10.
North led by seven with two minutes left before Murphy and Goins led the comeback. Goins connected on a shot in the post and Murphy converted a conventional 3-point play to cut it to two. Sophomore D’Laino Paige capped the 7-0 run by hitting a pair of free throws with five seconds left to tie it at 74.
Goins scored five points, Murphy added four and Kelley had two in overtime, and Mott was able to knock down just enough shots at the free throw line (5-of-14) to stave off North.
“It turned into a free-throw shooting competition in overtime and we struggled,” Mott coach Jeff Olind said. “If we would’ve made our free throws, it wouldn’t have been as close as it was.
“We had to pick up the defensive intensity in the second half and we got points off our defense, outscoring them, 24-15, in the third. Once we got back in it, it was a battle in the fourth and in overtime.”
Ricky Watson scored 29 for North (3-5, 1-3).
