Some of the top teams and players in the state will be participating in the Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League Showcase featuring games and skills competition Saturday at City Sports Arena in Detroit.
Numerous games will be played beginning at 11 a.m., with the featured game pitting defending state champion and unbeaten Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook up against one-loss Port Huron at 2 p.m.
"We're having this showcase to kind of highlight the best teams and best players on one stage or at one venue where college coaches can watch them play on a competitive environment," Cranbrook coach Terry Brooks said. "We feel several of these girls will end up playing college hockey. They have a goal to play Division I college hockey and when they look at that goal they know it takes a lot because there aren't that many D1 college hockey programs for women, so the competition is fierce for those scholarships."
Brooks has a number of D1-caliber players, including Hana DeClerk (17 goals, nine games), forward Leah Israel and goaltender Annie Chen.
"We're looking forward to facing Port Huron," Brooks said. "We're unbeaten in nine games so far and Port Huron has lost just one game. Hana DeClerk is fun to watch. There's no doubt that she's the best player in the league. She can put the puck in the net.
"Annie Chen, our goaltender, has only allowed six goals all season and has four straight shutouts."
Brooks talked about the skills competition.
"Each team will send four players to the skills competition, and it will be fastest skater, hardest shot and then a relay," Brooks said. "The goaltenders will do a shootout, facing skaters who are on breakaways."
