Detroit – Mikael Samuelsson cleared waivers Sunday and will be assigned to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, said general manager Ken Holland.
Samuelsson’s departure will create a roster spot for forward Johan Franzen, who will play Sunday against the Florida Panthers.
Franzen has missed the last 16 games due to a concussion.
Samuelsson, 37, had one goal and two assists in 26 games with the Red Wings this season, and has been a frequent healthy scratch lately.
Franzen has 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) in 30 games and gives coach Mike Babcock another healthy, productive body in a lineup that's regaining its depth and versatility after a staggering amount of injuries.
