Detroit News Dream Team quarterback Travis Smith of Ithaca gave Wake Forest a verbal commitment on Monday after decommitting from Toledo.
Ithaca coach Terry Hessbrook said Smith and his parents went to Winston-Salem, N.C., over the weekend for Smith’s official visit before making the decision.
“They were impressed with Wake Forest,” Hessbrook said. “It was the facilities, the coaching staff and the academics that were attractive. There wasn’t anything against Toledo. Travis said he wanted to play against the best competition, and with Florida State winning the national title, the (Atlantic Coast Conference) is just that.”
Smith (6-3, 200 pounds) is No. 26 on The Detroit News Blue Chip list. He led Ithaca to the Division 6 state title each of the past three seasons. This season Smith completed 188 of 264 passes for 3,278 yards, 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
