A witness who told St. Clair County sheriff’s deputies she saw someone dumping garbage along a rural road may instead have been watching someone dump human remains, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.
Authorities are investigating the discovery of human body parts left along Fred Moore Highway at Allington Road in China Township. The parts were found in garbage bags Thursday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.
Another witness, deputies said, reported suspicious activity to police about 4 p.m., said Sheriff Tim Donnellon.
“We are treating this incident as a homicide,” Donnellon said.
Authorities blocked off a stretch of the highway as detectives scoured the scene for evidence through 10 p.m. Thursday. It is an area is marked by homes with long country driveways with towering trees and no streetlights.
The Michigan State Police Crime Lab team from Sterling Heights was on hand to “process the scene,” according to MSP Lt. Michael Shaw.
The witness who saw the dumping told deputies a middle-aged woman driving a mid-1990s sport utility vehicle was throwing out something in garbage bags. Police say the witness described the vehicle as possibly a white or gray GMC Jimmy or Chevrolet Trailblazer.
