A Kansas man was charged Friday with causing a hit-and-run crash this week in Oakland County while driving drunk with his 13-year-old son — who also was intoxicated — in the car.
Steven Keith Fulton, 44, was arraigned on a charge of felony operating while intoxicated, third offense, as well as misdemeanor charges of driving with a suspended license, second offense; contributing to the delinquency of children; and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Police say Fulton was driving a Toyota that rear-ended a 28-year-old Oxford Township woman Tuesday while she was stopped at the light on Lapeer Road near Scripps Road in Orion Township.
The woman, who was unhurt, told police she was hit by a vehicle with Kansas license plates that had continued north.
Moments later, police tracked down a vehicle, which had heavy front-end damage and had driven into the median at Stadium Drive. Police said the car’s two occupants were Fulton and his son, who lives in Michigan, and that both appeared to be intoxicated.
Neither one had on shoes or a coat in the subzero temperatures and the vehicle smelled of intoxicants, according to reports.
Authorities say Fulton’s preliminary breath test registered a .28 blood alcohol content, more than three times the legal limit. He was arrested at the scene, while his son, who registered a .13 blood alcohol content, was released to his mother.
While investigating, police learned Fulton had rented a room at the Palace Inn on Lapeer Road and had purchased and supplied alcohol to his son and two 16-year-old girls from northern Oakland County just before the accident, authorities allege.
One of the 16-year-olds said Fulton made sexual advances toward her, authorities say.
Police say they also learned that Fulton had left Kansas City, Kan., three months ago and that Kansas City Police are investigating him on suspicion of making inappropriate sexual advances to an 11-year-old.
On Thursday, police in Kansas City issued a warrant against Fulton for aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The warrant carries a $40,000 cash bond and full extradition.
On Friday, Fulton appeared before Magistrate Maria Soma in the 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills, where Soma set a $25,000 cash bond and ordered him not to have contact with juveniles.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says it is working with police in Kansas City to continue the investigation.
