Bogart Lipe hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer Wednesday night to lift visiting Utica Ford over Grosse Pointe North, 49-47.
With 1.7 seconds left and his team trailing, Ford coach Jeff Olson called a timeout.
He drew up a play that his team does every day in practice.
“We were executing our end-clock play,” Olson said,” “I was confident that we’d get a good look, and the players executed fantastically.”
Ja’Won Vaughan received the inbounds pass and gave it to John Combs, who found Lipe open from deep, and he hit the winner as the clock ran out.
After trailing for most of the game, Ford finally got back in it with about four minutes left in the fourth.
“We picked up the pressure, got some steals, made some layups and a couple of threes,” said Olson.
Vaughan had just hit a 3-pointer seconds earlier to put Ford up 46-45 with 30 seconds left, which was their first lead since the first quarter. But North responded with a 10-foot jump shot to retake the lead.
Both Lipe and Vaughan finished with 10 points for Ford (8-4, 6-1 MAC White).
Justin Kennedy led North with 12 points.
