Southfield — Officers from three jurisdictions had their hands full Wednesday after a car chase that ended with a crash and a suspect attempting to flee on foot being Tasered.
According to reports, the incident began at about 5:30 p.m. on Eight Mile near Northland Drive when officers in a marked car attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation.
When officers hit their overhead lights, the driver of the suspect vehicle refused to pull over and instead accelerated onto the southbound Lodge Freeway, south of Eight Mile.
The fleeing vehicle exited at Seven Mile, spun out on the service drive and then drove the wrong way down the Seven Mile exit ramp, head on toward a police vehicle.
The suspect vehicle continued southbound on the freeway for several miles. By this time Southfield police were joined by officers from the Detroit and Highland Park police departments.
The pursuit ended at the intersection of Woodward and Davison when the fleeing vehicle struck an SUV. The suspect driver attempted to escape on foot but was Tasered and arrested after refusing orders to lie on the ground.
The driver complained of stomach pain as a result of the crash and was taken to nearby Providence Hospital for treatment.
According to police, the male driver — identified as a 44-year-old resident of Farmington Hills — has a criminal history that includes unarmed robbery, felonious assault and multiple drug charges.
Police were also informed by another police department that the suspect had fled from their officers two weeks earlier and that the suspect was a known heroin addict.
Two other people riding in the car were taken into custody, including a 43-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, also from Farmington Hills.
The woman had outstanding felony warrants out of Alleghany County, Pa., for dangerous drugs as well as fleeing and eluding. The 23-year-old man complained about a rib injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Highland Park Fire Department before being transported to a local hospital.
The woman was released when police in Pennsylvania declined to extradite her. The 23-year-old male was also released. The occupants of the SUV were not injured, according to police.
Police expect to charge the suspect with fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license.
