Champaign, Ill. — Becca Mills and Tori Jankoska each scored 22 to lead No. 24 Michigan State in a 69-53 victory over Illinois on Wednesday night.
The game was the Spartans’ first since returning to the Top 25.
Michigan State (15-7, 7-2 Big Ten) racked up 41 points in the first half and jumped out to a 17-point lead at the break. Midway through the second half both teams went without a basket and combined to miss 10 shots over 3 minutes, after which the Spartans took their largest lead of the game at 23 points.
The Spartans shot 53.3 percent from the floor and held Illinois (9-13, 2-7) to 17-of-55 shooting from the field and 17.6 percent from 3-point range.
Ivory Crawford scored 20 and went 9-of-10 from the line for the Fighting Illini. Illinois kept up with the Spartans in the second half, even outscoring them 29-28, but it wasn’t enough to close the first-half deficit.

(At) Bowling Green 72, Western Michigan 50: Miracle Woods had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Jessica Jessing added 11 points for the Broncos, who fell on the road.
Western (9-12, 5-5 MAC) trailed by only two at the half, but was outscored, 40-20, in the second half.
Jillian Halfhill’s 22 points led Bowling Green (19-3, 9-1).
(At) Akron 52, Eastern Michigan 48: Demetrius Treadwell scored 17 and Nick Harney added 15 as Akron took its first lead of the game with 42 seconds left to beat Eastern.
Akron (15-7, 7-2 MAC) trailed by nine points at the half and was still down by the same margin after a dunk by Eastern Michigan’s DaShonte Riley with 5:57 left to play.
Daylen Harrison and Darell Combs each scored 10 points for the Eagles (12-10, 4-5).
(At) Central Michigan 78, Kent State 73 (OT): Rayshawn Simmons converted 3 of 4 from the free-throw line in the closing seconds of overtime to earn Central its first MAC victory.
John Simons led Central Michigan (8-13, 1-8 MAC) with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Fowler added 18 points and Simmons and Braylon Rayson each added another 10.
Kris Brewer scored 17 points to lead Kent State (12-10, 3-6). Darren Goodson added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
(At) Western Michigan 90, Ohio 74: Austin Richie scored 22 and had a nearly perfect shooting night to lead the Broncos to victory. Richie hit all three of his 3-point attempts, all nine of his free throws, and shot 5-of-6 from the field overall. Western (13-9, 6-3 MAC) shot 59.6 percent, including 8-of-13 from 3-point range.
David Brown added 20 points, while Shayne Whittington and Connar Tava each scored 18 to pull the Broncos (13-8, 6-3 Mid-American) even with Ohio in conference play.
Maurice Ndour had 20 points to lead the Bobcats (16-6, 6-3).
