One good tool
Red is the color for the National Heart Month (February) and you canít go wrong with red kitchen tools. They are easy to find and add a nice splash of color to any kitchen. Cuisipro is offering a great line of red kitchen tools, from silicone locking tongs and a whisk to measuring spoons and silicone egg poachers (above). The distinctive design of the poacher clips on to the side of the pot and allows the water to circulate around the egg for proper poaching, ensuring that the yolk is in the center of the egg and resulting in evenly cooked whites. The poacher rinses clean in seconds and is top-shelf dishwasher safe. Retail price for a set of two is only $12. Get one for your valentine and you may get rewarded with a great breakfast. Available online at amazon.com, kitchenandcompany.com, chefscatalog.com and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
One good blender
National Soup Month may exist for only 28 days, but Iím making every one of them count. Using a Blendtec, which is a blender and food processor rolled into one, I can make some super soups in half the time and donít need to haul out the soup pot. It also can be used to make mixed drinks, juices, salsas, dips, hummus, pizza dough or brownies. Iím grateful that its slender design fits easily under a cabinet so I can use it at every meal (plus, I love the red color). Smoothies are a breeze, and a baked potato soup was a super-satisfying Saturday lunch recently. Blendtec prices vary from $300-$400, but it is worth the price when you discover how often you will use it. Available at fine kitchen stores, Bed, Bath & Beyond and online retailers.
One good tip
Brown sugar dried into hard, solid lumps? Get out the grater. Run the block of sugar along the grater to break down the hardened sugar into a measurable state.
