Elderly couple dies in 2-car western Michigan crash

Crockery Township, Mich. — Authorities say an 88-year-old driver and his 87-year-old wife from western Michigan died when their vehicle lost control and struck a pickup truck.

Ottawa County sheriff’s officials say Coopersville residents Robert and Erika Schmidt died Friday afternoon at the scene of the crash in Crockery Township. The pickup driver, 61-year-old Paul Whiteman of Muskegon, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Police released their names late Friday.

Investigators say the roads were wet and icy in spots at the time of the crash.
