So how are things with Kate Upton going?
Well ESPN’s Karl Ravech probably did as well as anyone when it comes to prying anything out of the usually reticent Justin Verlander when the subject turns to his life away from the diamond.
Ravech posed the question to the Tigers starter during a recent interview Verlander interview on ESPN, suggesting he was egged on by colleague Tim Kurkjian.
“I’ve always been private about my private life,” Verlander said.
The ESPN reminded the Tigers’ ace he’s been spotted with the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and St. Joseph native on kiss cams and in other highly visible places.
“It is hard to be private with her,” Verlander said. “I’m just in a great spot.”
Verlander was far more forthcoming about his offseason surgery to repair an injured core muscle and last season’s struggles. He also shared the somewhat surreal feeling of meeting a new manager 25 years younger than the previous boss.
“I didn’t know what to expect with our new manager Brad (Ausmus) and really on the first day I sat down with him and I’m like, ‘What do you want me to call you?’” Verlander said.
“I say ‘Skip’ and I immediately see this picture of Jim Leyland pop up in my head and he’s like just whatever comes natural — just not sir.”
