Somebody had to ask: Who's starting Opening Day?

Gage's 140 from Lakeland, Fla. (words, not characters)

Brad Ausmus’ first difficult decision will be this: Who will start for the Tigers on Opening Day?

If Justin Verlander is healthy, he'll want to — and if the honor is based on overall career, he'll deserve to.

If the choice is Max Scherzer, because of what he did last year, no one will strenuously disagree.

Then there's Anibal Sanchez, who only had the lowest earned-run average in the American League last year.

"I can't believe it took this long for someone to ask," Ausmus said.

Why ask when it's not yet answerable?

"We have three legitimate Opening Day-type pitchers," Ausmus said. "You could make an argument for any of the three.

"To say I haven't thought about it would be a lie. But we haven't made a final decision."

Didn't think so.

From now on, though, we'll keep asking.

No big surprise, but Tigers manager Brad Ausmus hasn't decided on an Opening Day starter yet. / Elizabeth Conley / Detroit News
