Man demonstrating gun safety to girlfriend fatally shoots himself

Independence Township A 36-year-old man apparently accidentally killed himself while demonstrating firearms safety to his girlfriend, according to Oakland County Sheriff's investigators.

Deputies were called at 9 p.m. Sunday to an address in the 4400 block of Pinedale on a report of a gunshot victim. Deputies found the man's girlfriend performing CPR on him but he could not be revived. His identity has not been released.

Thg girlfriend said the man had been drinking most of the day when he began instructing her on how to use his three handguns. The woman said he was attempting to show her how safe the weapons were when empty and pointed them one by one at his own head and pulled the trigger. The woman said he was demonstrating the safety of the third handgun, which he thought was unloaded like the others, when it went off, fatally wounding him in the head.

Deputies said there were three children, ages 7, 10 and 12 years old, in the home at the time of the incident but none were injured or witnessed the shooting.
