Former Lions running back Kevin Smith has signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
Smith, 27, was drafted by the Lions in the third round in 2008. He won the starting job as a rookie and finished with what would be a career-high 976 yards and eight touchdowns.
After three seasons with the Lions the team declined to offer Smith a contract and he became a free agent. But he was re-signed by the Lions in November 2011 after Jahvid Best was injured. He finished with 356 yards in seven game appearances in 2011.
Smith became an unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season and was not re-signed by the Lions.
The Blue Bombers play an 18-game schedule in the CFL. Their regular-season opener is June 26 at home against Toronto.
