Hamtramck was one of two U.S. cities to win the grand prize in USA Weekend’s “Red, White and You” essay contest. The city wins a Fourth of July celebration with fireworks.
The winning essay, written by Hamtramck Fire Department Motor Engineer John Dropchuk, explains why the 2.1-square-mile enclave of Detroit deserved to win. “Hamtramck, Michigan, is a perfect example of the melting pot that is the United States,” Dropchuk writes. “Cultural diversity and a strong blue collar work ethic make up the backbone of our town. There is no better representation of the pursuit of the ‘American Dream’ than Hamtramck ...” (Another reason to party, the Hamtramck Fire Department celebrates its 100 anniversary this year.)
The other winning city is Prescott, Arizona, where 19 firefighters were killed fighting a June wildfire.
