The American Institute of Architects Michigan has named artist and Heidelberg Project founder Tyree Guyton the first-ever winner of the Balthazar Korab Award, named for the legendary architectural photographer who died last year.

Citing Guyton’s work as an urban environmental artist, the AIA pointed to Heidelberg’s fame as “one of the most powerful art environments in the world,” one that’s drawn an international spotlight to the two-block installation on Detroit’s east side.

The Korab Award will be presented Saturday evening at AIA Michigan’s Design Awards celebration at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum in East Lansing.
