Tigers right-hander Luke Putkonen will be out six to eight weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, the team announced Friday. The date of his return is unknown.

Putkonen had a bone spur removed from his right elbow Thursday. The surgery was performed by noted specialist Dr. James Andrews.

The news is a reversal from last month, when Putkonen visited Andrews after his elbow flared up while pitching in the minors. It was determined then Putkonen would not need surgery.

Putkonen has been on the disabled list since April. He pitched in two games for the Tigers this season, allowing eight runs in 223 innings.
