Eighty-eight finalists are in competition for this year’s Knight Arts Challenge, it was announced Monday. The Challenge is distributing $19 million over three years to individuals and arts organizations with great art ideas for projects that one way or another touches on Detroit.
In 2013, the first year, the Knight Foundation awarded $2.1 million to 56 brainstorms. Proposals this year range from the straightforward to the esoteric — including one by Jessica Krcmarik to preserve the look of historic Detroit by making usable, digital typefaces from the city’s old ads and signs.
Winners will be announced in October.
