Barricaded, knife-wielding woman arrested in Detro...: A 48-year-old woman was arrested after pulling out a knife on two officers who were called to take her to a psychiatric hospital.

Detroit — Eluding tear gas and threatening with a knife, a woman kept police at bay for eight hours at her east-side home until police ended the standoff and apprehended her Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the 48-year-old woman's home in the 11800 block of Kennebec at 11:30 p.m. Monday night by her family members who wanted her to get treatment for her mental illness, according to Cmdr. Elvin Barren.

The woman then pulled out a knife on the two responding officers who were to take her to Psychiatric Crisis Center in Detroit.

The officers established a perimeter and called for the SWAT team and two armored vehicles, including one with thermal technology that was able to pick up on the woman's heat signature.

SWAT members used gas to encourage the woman to come out of the home, but the standoff continued despite pleas from negotiators and the woman's family members: "We've been here all night, and we're still here for you," a negotiator told the woman over a PA at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"She was able to do away with the issues of gas by finding a cubby hole, if you will, and cover her face with blankets and whatnot," Barren said.

As temperatures rose, the tactical team had a hard time finding her "faint" heat signature, prompting the body armor-bolster team to break open the door to allow a small recognizance robot to enter the home, clearing the first floor as a result.

SWAT members also broke out the front windows, leaving the blinds of the two-story home disheveled as they tried to locate her.

“We had a shield to ward off knife attacks," Barren said.

They found the woman hiding in a basement closet. She was apprehended and taken to the Psychiatric Crisis Center by ambulance. Police said the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will determine if any charges will be filed against the woman.

No one was injured in the situation.
