Sterling Heights — A city police officer responding to a domestic abuse call Saturday morning fatally shot a man after the suspect brought out a rifle while assaulting his wife, police say.
The couple’s child called police at around 6:50 a.m. and officers went to the home, located in the 37000 block of Lola Drive, near 16 ½ Mile and Dodge Park Road.
When officers entered the house, the 54-year-old man was pointing a rifle at them, police say. Police say the officer feared for his safety and fired his weapon. It is not clear how many shots were fired or where the man was hit.
The man was taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Michigan State Police has taken over the investigation, Sterling Heights police say.
State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Shaw declined to comment Saturday afternoon.
