Quick hits

Here’s what you need to know:

■The Tigers, after falling out of first place earlier in the week, are back atop the American League Central following Friday night’s 6-4 win over the Indians — and the Royals’ 7-5 loss to the Mariners.

■After more work with pitching coach Jeff Jones this week, this time under the watchful eye of Brad Ausmus, Justin Verlander looks to get back on track. He is 2-5 with a 7.83 ERA in seven starts since May 14.

■Trevor Bauer, meanwhile, gets the start for the Indians. He faced the Tigers on May 20, and was sharp, allowing just two runs on seven hits in six innings in a victory. That day, he struck out five and walked three.

■J.D. Martinez is back in the lineup for the Tigers, and why not? He’s scorching. In his last 10 games, he’s batting .447 with four homers and 11 RBIs. In three games in Cleveland this year, he’s batting .600 with seven RBIs.

■Actually, both Martinezes own the Indians this year. J.D. Martinez and Victor Martinez have homered in the same game three times this season, and all three times have come against the Indians, including Friday.

■Encouraging signs on the Joe Nathan front. His last two outings, he’s struck out five of the seven batters he’s faced, after posting just five strikeouts over the previous 42 batters he faced.

■The Indians lead the season series 4-2, after the Tigers won 15 of 19 last year.

News bulletin

Here are some Tigers stories to catch up on prior to first pitch:

■Is J.D. Martinez’s hot streak about to push another Tigers outfielder out of a starting job? It just might.

■Despite some shaky bullpen work by Ian Krol, the Tigers were able to hang on against the Indians on Friday.

This is becoming all too familiar: Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson is having another up-and-down season.

■Tigers catcher Alex Avila was none too pleased by the suggestion he might be tipping his pitches.

■After some spring cleaning, the Tigers are having a garage sale!
