Triple A Toledo

Who’s hot …

Hernan Perez, SS/2B: .333 in his last 10 games and .276 in 71 games for the Mud Hens. Perez is 23, a right-handed batter, and will likely figure in trade talks if he isn’t yet ticketed for time in Detroit.

Kevin Whelan, RH reliever: In eight of his last 10 appearances, Whelan has scarcely been touched. On the season he is 2-1, with a 1.88 ERA in 21 games. He is 30 years old, 5-11, 184, and was a fourth-round draft pick by the Tigers in 2005. A year later he was dealt to the Yankees as part of the Gary Sheffield deal. He has since rejoined the Tigers and in 2014 has a .202 opposing batting average.

Jose Ortega, RH reliever: 1.93 ERA in his last 10 game, and 2.93 in 24 games in 2014. Ortega, 25, has pitched in 13 games with the Tigers since 2012.

And who’s not …

Mud Hens have approved grades for the third week in June.

Double A Erie

Who’s hot …

Corey Jones, 2B/3B: .314 in 51 games, with an .829 OPS. Jones, 26, was a seventh-round pick in 2010 (Cal-State Fullerton). He bats left-handed, and is 6-foot, 205.

And who’s not

Aaron Westlake, 1B: .111 in his last 10 games. Tigers expected more from a third-round pick in 2011 (Vanderbilt). For the season, Westlake, who bats left-handed and stands 6-4, is hitting .233, with a .662 OPS.

Single A Lakeland

Who’s hot …

Josh Turley, LH starter: Knuckleball is only part of the story to Turley’s 2014 magic. Turley is 6-0, with a 1.91 ERA, in 10 starts. He is 6-0, 185, is 23 years old, and was a 16th-round pick (Baylor) in 2012.

Jake Thompson, RH starter: Pitching, it’s always pitching, at Lakeland. Thompson’s season has been a steady string of quality starts, offset by a once-in-a-blue-moon stinker. He is 6-2, with a 2.43 ERA, which is what the Tigers had in mind when they made him their top draft pick in 2012, fresh from a suburban Dallas high school. Thompson is 20 years old.

And who’s not …

Flying Tigers haven’t been the most distinguished team in the Florida State League. But in recent days they’ve avoided any truly odious individual efforts. They have earned commendation for, at the very least, a proper degree of mediocrity.

Single A West Michigan

Who’s hot …

Dominic Ficociello, 1B: He’s batting .361 in his past 10 games, with a .911 OPS. Ficociello was drafted a couple of times by the Tigers, most recently a year ago, when he signed out of the University of Arkansas. He is a switch-hitter, 6-4, 205.

Zac Reininger, RH reliever: Very good season for a 21-year-old pitcher the Tigers drafted in 2013 in the eighth round (Hill Junior College, Texas). He is 1-0, with a 2.42 ERA, in 13 games, with a .188 opposing batting average. Reininger is 6-3, 170. In his last 10 games, spanning 19-1/3 innings, Reininger has struck out 22, walked seven, and allowed 12 hits.

And who’s not …

Once again, the Whitecaps have avoided any uncomfortable call-outs for performances that fall below desired achievement levels.
