Warren man could face more charges after cellmate dies

A 17-year-old Warren man charged with assaulting a cellmate at the Macomb County Jail last month could face more serious charges.

The victim died at a hospital last week, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said Wednesday.

Mark Alonzo Cowans has been charged with assault with intent to commit great bodily harm. He was arraigned May 30 in 41-B District Court in Clinton Township. A magistrate set his bond at $100,000, but he remains at the jail, officials said.

Police accuse Cowans of attacking 34-year-old Ryan Edward Hagerman, also of Warren, May 28 while they shared a cell at the county jail.

Cowans was brought to the jail the day before when Warren police arrested him for carrying a concealed weapon, Wickersham said. Hagerman was in jail for retail fraud and other charges, police said.

Hagerman was taken to the McLaren Medical Center for lacerations and head wounds, according to authorities.

Deputies determined Cowans pulled Hagerman off his bunk, started punching him and then kicked him repeatedly once he was on the floor.

Hagerman died June 19.

Wickersham said results of an autopsy are pending. The findings will determine whether an elevated charge will be sought for Cowans, he added.

A 4 p.m. memorial service will be held for Hagerman Friday at Kaul Funeral Home, 35201 Garfield in Clinton Township. Visitation begins at 12:30 p.m.
