Grapevine: Award-winning actor Eli Wallach dies at 98

Character actor Eli Wallach, 98, died Tuesday at his home in Manhattan. He had roles in the 1960s films “The Magnificent Seven,” “The Misfits” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” His more recent roles were in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” and “The Ghost Writer.” Wallach has earned BAFTA, Tony and Emmy awards, as well as an Honorary Academy Award in 2010.

Top comedians come with Oddball Fest

Funny or Die’s Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival returns to DTE Energy Music this year with a star-packed lineup. Chris Hardwick, Jim Jefferies, Sarah Silverman, Hannibal Buress and Bill Burr headline, along with the stars of the new comedy “Undateable,” (which is set in Ferndale) Chris D’Elia and Ron Funches. The fest is Aug. 29 and tickets, $20 lawn and $29.75-$59.85, go on sale Saturday. In other comedy news, Mike Epps will ring in the new year at the Fox Theatre on Dec. 31. Tickets are $59.75-$85.75 and go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.

Channel 56 offline this morning

If you tried to tune in to “Curious George” this morning with no luck, here’s why: WTVS Detroit Public TV is off the air from 5-11 a.m. today “due to unavoidable transmitter repairs.” Channels 20 and 62 will also be off the air, since all share a transmitter. The DPTV signal will remain available to Comcast and U-verse subscribers.

Martha Reeves to give keynote at community forum

Motown star Martha Reeves will give the keynote speech at the Concert of Colors Forum on Community, Culture and Race on July 9 at the Arab American National Museum. WDET-FM’s Martina Guzman will moderate the forum, which includes a discussion with three panelists: visual artist Adnan Charara, hip-hop artist Mahogany Jones and musician and composer Joel Peterson, a 2010 Kresge Arts Fellow. The forum, 1:30-6 p.m., is free but registration is required by visiting arabamericanmuseum.org/forum_on_community.

■Former “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” contestant Caleb Bankston was killed in a train accident Tuesday when the car he was riding in derailed. Bankston was a conductor for the Alabama Warrior Railway in Birmingham, Alabama.

■Justin Bieber was a passenger in a car that was involved in a minor car accident in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Tuesday. TMZ says the pop star was in a Cadillac Escalade that was driving fast to escape from a photographer.
