How the Americans can advance:
The United States will clinch a spot in the World Cup knockout stage with a victory or tie against Germany on Thursday. But if the Americans lose they will need some help:
* If the United States loses and Ghana and Portugal draw, the United States will advance.
* If Ghana defeats Portugal and the combined victory margin of that game and Germany’s victory over the United States is more than two goals, Ghana would advance on goals differential and the United States would be left out.
* If Portugal defeats Ghana and the combined victory margin of that game and Germany’s victory over the United States is more than five goals, Portugal would advance on goals differential and the United States would be left out.
* If the United States and either Ghana or Portugal wind up tied in points and goal differential, the next tiebreaker is goals scored. If that, too, is even, lots will be drawn to determine who advances.
