Western Michigan center Shayne Whittington will become a member of the Indiana Pacers next week.

Whittington agreed in principle to sign a free-agent contract with the Pacers. No contract can be signed until next week which is the beginning of the NBA’s free agency period.

“I got the phone call from my agent Herb (Rudoy) this morning and had an instant smile on my face,” said Whittington in a statement. “He said, ‘Shayne, you’re going to be a Pacer.’ It was really emotional, and all I could think to do was call my family and let them know."

Whittington, a native of Paw Paw, Mich., averaged 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds to lead the Broncos to the Mid-American Conference tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

He was one of 64 seniors invited to the Portsmouth Invitational in mid-April and averaged 19.6 points, making 10-of-22 3-pointers to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
