The Tigers are “quite interested” in bringing back right-handed reliever Joaquin Benoit, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
Benoit, 36, has been effective for the Padres this season, with a 1.30 ERA and 0.72 WHIP over 34.2 innings. But the Padres, 37-47 and 10.5 games behind the Giants in the NL West, might be sellers at the trade deadline.
Benoit had three good seasons in Detroit from 2011-13 but signed a three-year, $22 million deal with the Padres in the offseason. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported last week that the Padres were listening to offers for both Benoit and closer Huston Street.
