Police arrested a man suspected of stabbing his ex-girlfriend in Allen Park Thursday morning after a 40-minute car chase ended in a crash on Interstate 94 in Ypsilanti.
The suspect stabbed the woman in the upper-right area of her chest at 2:45 a.m. outside of her Allen Park home, where she was getting in her car on her way to work, Allen Park police said.
Police say the woman screamed as he tried to drag her to his car after which a neighbor came outside. The suspect pushed the woman in the direction of the neighbor and fled.
About three hours later at 7:10 a.m., an off-duty Allen Park police officer, who was driving home after his shift, spotted the suspect’s vehicle near Allen and Champaign.
He followed the suspect and alerted on-duty officers, who tried to stop the suspect near Allen and Southfield.
But the suspect drove off, leading police on a nearly 20-mile chase that ended at about 7:40 a.m. when he crashed into a median wall on westbound I-94 near Huron Street.
Police say the ex-girlfriend has been treated and released.
