Marimekko's iconic poppy pattern Unikko celebrates 50 years

You’ve seen the design: big, boldly colored poppies splashed across chairs, sofas and pillows. Fifty years ago, Scandanavian-brand Marimekko first introduced its signature Unikko design. But the story behind the iconic textile design is that Marimekko founder Armi Ratia didn’t even like floral patterns. She said flowers should only bloom in nature. Designer Maija Isola disagreed, creating an entire collection of floral patterns including Unikko (which means “poppy” in Finnish). In 2009, Bemz began selling the beloved poppy pattern on ready-made slipcovers for IKEA furniture. To learn more about the celebration of this iconic design go to unikko.marimekko.com.

If tufted upholstery makes you think of old and outdated furniture, you haven’t seen Jessica Charles’ new collection. There is blind tufting (no buttons) and diamond tufting (a diamond arrangement of the buttons). There’s also biscuit tufting, in which the tufting forms a square pattern. Jessica Charles is available at Baker at the Michigan Design Center in Troy or at Gorman’s in Novi.

‘Celebrate America’ is this week’s winner

'Celebrate America' is this week's winner

The Fourth of July has always been special to Judy Garrett — and for good reason. It’s not just the nation’s birthday, it’s also Garrett’s birthday. “I’ve always been patriotic,” she says in an email. It shows in her garden. The longtime gardener mixes hostas, day lilies, hydrangea and a red, white and blue banner. “I plant annuals (various colors of New Guinea impatiens, wave petunias, Gerber Daisies) to complement my perennials,” says Garrett. Garrett’s patriotic garden is this week’s winner of the Homestyle Garden Photo Contest. She’ll win a free home or garden book; she’ll also be a finalist for the grand prize at the end of the summer, a $100 gift card to English Gardens. To enter your best garden shot, go to detroitnews.com/gardenphotos. Or you can mail a photo to Homestyle Garden Photo Contest, 615 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit, MI 48226.
