Michigan wide receiver Devin Funchess and quarterback Devin Gardner have been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is given yearly to the best player in college football.

Funchess, a converted tight end, was Big Ten first team and named the league’s tight end of the year last season after finishing with 49 catches for 748 yards and six touchdowns. The 748 yards are the most by a tight end in UM history.

Gardner finished last season with 2,960 yards passing, the second-highest total in school history. He also earned an All-Big Ten honorable mention.

The Maxwell Award winner will be announced Dec. 11.

Defensive end Frank Clark and linebacker Jake Ryan are on the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the college defensive player of the year.

Clark was a second-team All-Big Ten selection last season, and Ryan, a co-captain who missed the first five games of last season while recovering from knee surgery, also was second-team All-Big Ten.
