Jeffrey F. Konya, athletic director at California State-Bakersfield since 2010, was named athletic director at Oakland University on Monday.
Konya replaces Robby Stewart, who served as interim director of athletics since Feb. 1, effective Aug. 11.
Born in Royal Oak, Konya was responsible for all operational aspects of an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletic department at Cal-Bakersfield, with an estimated $11 million annual budget.
“It is my responsibility as a leader and educator to create an environment for our student-athletes to be successful academically, athletically and socially,” Konya said.
“I firmly believe student-athlete development must be a priority and that our efforts are integrated with campus initiatives and opportunities.”
Konya is recognized as a marketing innovator. He initiated a campaign that featured his implementation of the “blue basketball court” at Bakersfield State, which has been noted as one of the first unique basketball court visual brands on the market.
He graduated from Princeton in 1995 and completed his Juris Doctor with honors in 1998 at the Iowa College of Law. Konya also has served as athletic director at Northeastern State (Oklahoma) and in senior athletic capacities at SMU, Memphis, Bucknell and Texas San Antonio.
