WXYZ-TV Chief Meteorologist Dave Rexroth (WXYZ-TV)
Surgery went well Wednesday for WXYZ-TV Chief Meteorologist Dave Rexroth, who had an eye removed after he was seriously injured in a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July, according to the station.
“The doctor confirms Dave’s eye was cut in the accident, but there were no actual burns — which will ease the process of replacing it with a prosthetic eye,” the station reported on its website on Wednesday afternoon.
The procedure was Rexroth’s first step in his recovery from the incident that caused him to lose sight in his left eye, according to WXYZ-TV. Rexroth will have a follow-up exam on July 17 after which he plans to return to Michigan for additional surgery, the station announced on its website.
Rexroth posted his first public message on social media Tuesday afternoon days after the fireworks accident.
“Although the past few days have been challenging, I have been overwhelmed by the love and kind words from not only those closest to me but every single one of you,” Rexroth wrote on his Facebook page. “Over my 14 years in Detroit and southeast Michigan, I’ve been truly blessed with the most caring and supportive viewers, coworkers and friends ever.”
“Your thoughts, prayers, and encouragement are really helping me get through this,” Rexroth wrote. “Thank you all so much. I look forward to being back on air and being able to thank you directly.”
Rexroth was hospitalized while vacationing with his family in Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa police have not released the circumstances of the incident. Sgt. Scott Gaarde confirmed fireworks are illegal in the state, but said “at this time we do not have an active criminal investigation into the usage of fireworks in this particular incident.”
Rexroth, the station’s chief meteorologist since August 2010, provides weather updates during the 5, 6, 7 and 11 p.m. newscasts. He is expected to return in September.
