Flint school district to outsource 185 positions

Flint — Flint’s public school district has approved outsourcing 185 positions including substitute teachers, technology positions and school safety advocates.

The Flint Journal reports the district’s board voted 8-1 Wednesday to approve the cost-cutting move.

The school district estimates that the savings could be around $500,000 for the one-year deal. Officials say that athletic coaches and others will also be included.

Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins says legacy costs for school safety advocates prompted the outsourcing.

Plans for the outsourcing were outlined in the district’s plan to erase its $20.4 million deficit, which doubled from estimates last year. The district has until July 31 to resubmit an updated deficit elimination plan to the Michigan Department of Education.
