Summerfield Township — Authorities are investigating a homemade aircraft crash that killed the 69-year-old pilot in southeastern Michigan’s Monroe County.
The Monroe News reports that Monroe County sheriff’s deputies on Friday identified Kenneth West as the operator of the aircraft that went down Thursday afternoon near a small airport in Summerfield Township.
The aircraft crashed shortly after taking off. West died on impact.
Authorities had been searching for West, of Monroe, when he failed to return home Thursday. The crash site was spotted from a police helicopter about 2 p.m. Friday about 40 miles southwest of Detroit and near the Ohio state line.
