Detroit — A hatchet-wielding man attacked an off-duty Detroit police officer attending a church service Sunday on the city’s west side, police said.
The suspect, a 27-year-old from Detroit, arrived outside of Citadel of Praise in the 20200 block of Lyndon at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, according to Officer Adam Madera.
“The officer went outside to calm him down and try to remove the ax or hatchet,” Madera said.
Instead, the man, who is believed to be mentally ill, drew the weapon on the officer, striking him multiple times in the legs.
The officer, who was armed, shot the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition, Madera said Monday.
The officer was treated for minor leg wounds.
It is unclear why the man came to the church, Madera said.
