Michigan’s athletic department is seeking approval from the school’s Board of Regents to have fireworks displays at two football games at Michigan Stadium this fall.

Douglas L. Strong, interim Chief Financial Officer, submitted a signed request to be considered at Thursday’s meeting.

The fireworks shows, produced by ACE Pyro, would take place Sept. 13 when Michigan plays Miami of Ohio and on Oct. 11 for the night game against Penn State. The Penn State game begins at 7 p.m.; the start time for the Miami game has not been announced.

In the request, Strong said the “close proximity” fireworks would “further enhance the fan experience for these important games.” He also indicated that ACE Pyro has provided all associated fireworks information to the U-M fire marshal, the Office of Risk Management Services, the Division of Public Safety and the athletic department.

The fireworks would be launched from both the east and west towers at Michigan Stadium, and from the playing field.

Fireworks were displayed at Michigan Stadium during the NHL’s Winter Classic in January, at the Michigan vs. Michigan State outdoor hockey game in December 2010, and at the Michigan vs. Connecticut football game in September 2010.
