Tony Paul: Tigers midseason grades

The News -- and readers -- hand out the Tigers midseason grades

Detroit — There is nothing written in sports, ever, that inspires more angry, expletive-filled e-mails from readers than the team report cards.

Honestly, the emails always give me a chuckle.

But they also got me thinking: If fans are so sure of themselves, why not let them hand out grades?

So that’s what The Detroit News has done this year for the Tigers’ midseason report card.

Tigers fans last week were invited to bust out their red pens and pick the first-half marks for every player who a) played at least one game in Detroit this year, and b) still remains in the organization. And the response was surprisingly impressive.

More than 500 Tigers fans participated in the process, and you can see their final grades (as a cumulative average), along with mine.

Come back Friday, when we show you a much more comprehensive look at what the fans had to say.

Today, you are treated to mostly my take. Click through the gallery above or go here to see my grades and analysis.

Feel free to fire away with the emails; I’ve already cleared out my inbox.
