A great summer of golf and giving back

“Outta my mind on a Saturday moanin’ ”

The 2014 Marathon Classic, presented by Owens Corning & O-I, is underway through Sunday at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio.

Marathon Petroleum Corp.’s president and CEO, Gary R. Heminger, told me how proud he is of raising nearly $400,000 last year alone in the golf tournament for more than 20 children’s charities in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

More than $8 million raised since its inception!

■ One of the many perks of having Marathon involved (and there are many), is the appearance of one of their longtime spokesmen, The King, NASCAR’s legendary Richard Petty.

One of the most accomplished drivers in the history of the sport, Richard told me he was enjoying watching the best of the LPGA and meeting fans and signing autographs. Now in his 70s, he has one of the strongest handshakes of anyone at any age.

■ Delta Airlines’ Nick Demarco and John Fechushak are excited about their first Delta C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Golf Classic on Aug. 4 at Barton Hills Country Club at 730 Country Club Road, Ann Arbor. To purchase a foursome, sponsorship or make a donation, call (734) 247-2258.

■ Our 11th annual Paul W. Smith Golf Classic to benefit Detroit Police Athletic League is coming up fast, Aug. 11, at Detroit Golf Club. We are still welcoming sponsors and folks who would like to become one of “Paul’s Pals.” Details at www.paulwsmithgolf.com.

■The LPGA plans to bring 23 world-class golfers to play in Detroit to help raise $1 million for Cornerstone Schools.

Cornerstone co-founder Clark Durant will proudly help host the Turning Point Invitational” Aug. 25 at the legendary Country Club of Detroit.

Paul W. Smith is host of “The Paul W. Smith Show” on WJR-AM (760).
