Washington— General Motors Co. said Wednesday it is recalling 822,685 vehicles worldwide — including 717,950 vehicles in the United States — in six new recall campaigns.
In the latest of a long string of callbacks, most are for minor problems. None are related to ignition switch defects that have plagued the automaker.
The recalls mean GM North America has issued a record 60 recall campaigns this year affecting 28.77 million vehicles worldwide and 25.48 million in the United States. GM revised downward its June 30 recall of Malibus, Impalas and other vehicles for ignition switch problems by 1.02 million vehicles to 6.6 million worldwide.
The biggest recall announced Wednesday covers 475,000 newer cars and trucks worldwide (414,333 in the U.S.) with power height-adjustable driver or front passenger seats. A bolt that secures the seat could fall out, letting the seat move up and down. Affected models include the 2011-12 Chevrolet Camaro; 2010-12 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain; 2011-12 Buick Regal and LaCrosse; and 2010-12 Cadillac SRX. GM is aware of one crash and three injuries linked to the defect. Dealers will replace the bolt.
“These recalls signify how we’ve enhanced our approach to safety,” said Jeff Boyer, GM’s vice president of Global Vehicle Safety. “We are bringing greater rigor and discipline to our analysis and decision-making. If we identify an issue — large or small — that might affect the safety of our customers, we will act decisively.”
GM had decided on four of the recalls last Tuesday, and GM CEO Mary Barra disclosed the higher total before a Senate committee.
Eric Ibara, director of residual values for Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, said GM’s latest recalls “involve models that are currently being sold by the various GM brands, unlike earlier recalls on discontinued models. Going forward, attention will be focused on whether sales and values are impacted on these models.”
More than half of GM’s 29 million vehicles recalled this year are ignition-switch related, including 2.6 million Cobalts, Ions and other cars linked to at least 13 deaths. GM has recalled nearly all nameplates of 2014 models except the Volt and some versions of models like the Spark EV.
Other recalls announced Wednesday include:
■124,008 2014 Chevrolet Caprice; 2014 Chevrolet SS; 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado LD and HD; 2013-14 Cadillac ATS; 2014 Cadillac CTS, 2014 Cadillac ELR; 2013-14 Buick Encore; and 2014-15 GMC Sierra LD and HD vehicles. Some may have an incomplete weld on the seat-hook bracket assembly. If the weld is incomplete, dealers will replace the lower seat track. Less than 1 percent of welds are expected to require fixes. GM is unaware of crashes or injuries.
■120,426 2011-13 Buick Regals and 2013 Chevrolet Malibus that use two bulbs in each front turn signal. The driver gets a rapidly flashing turn signal arrow in the instrument cluster if both bulbs in one turn signal are burned out; but if only one bulb on either side burns out, there would be no signal to the driver. Dealers will reprogram the body control module. GM knows of no crashes, injuries or complaints.
■57,242 2014 Chevrolet Impalas equipped with belt-drive electric power steering. Owners may experience reduced or no power-steering assist at start-up or while driving due to a poor electrical ground connection. If power steering is lost, a warning message is displayed on the driver information center and a chime sounds. The cars will revert to manual steering mode, requiring greater to steer, particularly at low speed. Dealers will check the ground and update the power steering control module’s software. GM is aware of one crash but no injuries.
■1,919 2014-15 Chevrolet Sparks imported from Korea assembled with lower control arm bolts that were not fastened to specification. The condition could result in separation of the lower control arm from the steering knuckle, resulting in loss of steering control. Dealers will make sure the bolts are properly tightened. GM knows of no crashes or injuries.
■22 2015 model-year Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon Denali vehicles in the U.S. Roof carriers may have been attached with the wrong retaining nuts, resulting in holes or tears in the roof rail air bags if they deploy. Eight of these vehicles are in dealer stock and will be repaired before being sold.
