Michigan State’s recruiting class of 2015 grew by two this week when Highland Springs (Virginia) wide receiver Felton Davis and West Mesquite (Texas) cornerback Josh Butler both committed to the Spartans.

Butler is a four-star Scout 300 member who chose the Spartans over 25 other offers including UCLA, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Mississippi.

“He is a prospect who has been elite in camp showings,” said Scout.com National Analyst Greg Powers, “pulling down accolades and awards, showing great coverage abilities, instincts, and the savvy that it takes to play on the island on the next level.”

At 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, continuing to add muscle is a priority for the athletic cover man.

“Throughout the course of the spring he has also added some nice muscle to his frame,” said Powers, “and showed while playing safety that he is not a liability against the run and can make the tough tackles when called on. A well-rounded skill set as a prospect.”

Davis is a big-framed wideout (6-3, 175 pounds) who held offers from Miami, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and several others. He also had interest from Ohio State and Nebraska, who were hoping to get him on campus for a visit, but upon visiting East Lansing, Davis promptly canceled those visits.

”It was just something that happened when I got there,” Davis told Spartan Digest’s Mike Wilson. “It was the coaching staff, the players and the facilities and the academic staff.”

The two commitments have moved the Spartans into Scout.com’s national top 25 team recruiting rankings at this early point in time.

Ohio OT has Spartans in top four

Rob Dowdy, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound offensive tackle from Westerville South (Ohio), has named a top four of Miami, Michigan State, North Carolina State and West Virginia, in that order. Dowdy last visited the Spartans in March, when he was offered.

Texas guard visits

The Spartans hosted Houston Kinkaid guard Tyler Higby this week. A 6-foot-4, 285-pound senior to be, he has offers from LSU, Louisville, Mississippi, Oklahoma State, TCU, Miami and now the Spartans, who offered him after his visit. He has not named any favorites at this time.
