Lansing— Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is hiring a top Michigan Republican political strategist to help steer his national political action committee — the precursor of a likely 2016 presidential campaign.
Paul on Monday is expected to name John Yob national political director of RANDPAC, a political operation that’s already establishing ties in early 2016 primary states and helping conservative Republicans get elected to public office. Yob also will serve as chief Michigan strategist for RANDPAC.
“John Yob is one of the brightest political operatives in Michigan and across the nation. His experience and expertise will help me make many vital decisions,” Paul said in a statement sent to The Detroit News on Sunday. “John joins a growing team which will be focused on electing constitutional conservatives into every office across the United States.”
Yob held a similar position in 2007 and 2008 while working to help Arizona Sen. John McCain win the Republican nomination for president.
Through his Grand Rapids political consulting firm Strategic National, Yob is a senior adviser to the re-election campaigns of Gov. Rick Snyder, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley and Attorney General Schuette, as well as Republican Terri Lynn Land’s U.S. Senate campaign.
In the past month, Paul’s PAC has hired Steve Grubbs, a veteran of Iowa presidential politics, and Mike Biundo, who was Rick Santorum’s national campaign manager in the 2012 Republican presidential primaries.
“The Republican Party is going to need to learn how to reach out to non-traditional Republican groups in order to win a national election again given the changing demographics in a post-Obama era,” Yob said in a statement. “Sen. Paul has the ability to inspire a new generation of conservatives, libertarians and disaffected Democrats in states across the country.”
Yob also has a history of working for candidates outside of the GOP establishment, such as running the successful gubernatorial campaign of Snyder — a political neophyte — in 2010 against four established Republican politicians.
Though he works with candidates across the country, Yob is best known in Republican circles for his work managing GOP state convention nominations in Michigan and 37 other states. He claims a Michigan Republican state convention record of 47 victories and one loss since 1998.
