Michigan libraries get $400,000 from man's will

Kalkaska — Two Traverse City-area libraries have received a $400,000 surprise donation through a man’s will.

Charles Heffer of Williamsburg left the money to the Kalkaska and the Elk Rapids libraries. The Traverse City Record-Eagles reports Heffer was 89 when he died in May 2013.

The Kalkaska Library director says patrons joked with Heffer that he could leave money to the library. He says the library board has designated the funds for a new building.

The Elk Rapids Library director says the donation is almost double the library’s annual budget. She says Heffer didn’t have a library card there and she doesn’t know why he gave to the library.

Elk Rapids library is conducting a public survey to decide how to use the money. A consulting team will also consider the funding.
