105.1 FM one-ups -- and ups and ups -- 97.1 FM with sky-high perch at Lions practice

Allen Park If necessity is the mother of invention, the folks at WMGC (105.1 FM) are taking the old saying to heart.

Radio rival 97.1 The Ticket is the flagship station for Lions games. It hasn't broadcast yet from Lions training camp but plans to do so. In the meantime, its exclusive contract with the Lions prevents WMGC from broadcasting on the premises.

So WMGC got creative.

Instead of broadcasting from Lions headquarters, they rented a 50-foot scissor lift and have held had their afternoon shows from next door, at TechShop Detroit.

Host Matt Dery was perched on the lift for his afternoon show from noon to 3 p.m.

WMGC plans more broadcasts from the ad-hoc perch:

■ Monday, Aug. 4: Ryan and Rico Show (10 a.m. to noon)

■ Thursday, Aug. 7: Matt Dery (noon to 3 p.m.)

■ Wednesday, Aug. 13: Matt Dery (noon to 3 p.m.)
