Supermodel Kate Upton subbed as a guest host for Kelly Ripa on “Live with Kelly and Michael,” with Michael Strahan on Friday morning and didn’t hold back in talking about her boyfriend, Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander.
The discussion about Verlander starts at about 2:35 in the video above (click here if you’re having trouble seeing it) and covers the Tigers’ visit to Yankee Stadium this week.
“I used to be a really big Yankees fan, but I’m actually ... sleeping with the enemy,” Upton confessed to Strahan. “My boyfriend plays for the Tigers. I had to pick a side. And I felt it, too, when I walked in and I— they specifically told me, the Yankees told me, they’re, like, ‘You’re not allowed to wear a Tigers hat, you’re not allowed to wear any Tigers gear.
“It’s like a bad breakup.”
Strahan asked if her boyfriend pitched that game, and Upton said yes, adding, “He did amazing but ... they didn’t win.”
Verlander allowed five hits and two runs in seven innings on Wednesday as the Tigers lost, 5-1.
Upton is well aware of fans who blame her for Verlander’s atypical dip in performance this season.
“They always blame me, everybody blames me,” she said.
“He’s so good, I’m not worried about it,” Strahan said. “He’s an incredible player.”
Upton also provided a glimpse into Verlander’s pregame rituals, saying he told her, “I like to be angry before I pitch. He didn’t tell me before. So he’d seem like he was in a bad mood before he pitched. So I’d be, like, ‘joke, joke, joke, joke, joke,’ trying to cheer him up. And then he got mad at me; he’s, like, ‘Stop making me laugh; I’m trying to be angry.’
“I went straight to wear a Yankees cap.”
When asked if her one-time Yankees allegiance put a strain on their relationship, Upton said, “He says any time we’re fighting I wear a Yankees hat, and when we’re getting along I’m wearing a Detroit hat.”
Strahan later asked if her relationship was “love at first sight.”
“No, no-no-no-no — no,” Upton said, rolling her eyes, then bursting into laughter. “We were friends for a while.”
