St. Clair — Charlevoix’s Maureen Whitehead won the 11th annual Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur at St. Clair Golf Club on Wednesday.
Whitehead beat Kalamazoo’s Sue Campbell, 3 and 2, in the championship match.
“I came without any expectations because I wasn’t sure how I would play,” said Whitehead, who also won the tournament in 2005.
“I played pretty steady, made pars and some bogeys but didn’t make any double bogeys. Then I threw in a birdie, and that’s all it took.”
Campbell, also a former two-time winner, beat Southfield’s Shelly Weiss, 3 and 2, in the semifinal.
Whitehead beat Ada’s Joan Garety, 4 and 3, in her semifinal.
Whitehead, 61, a former Hillsdale area resident, said she won Nos. 5, 6 and 7 and had a 4-up lead through nine holes in the title match.
“Sue played tough and I just held the lead,” she said. “It feels good to win, especially when I didn’t know what to expect. I was a little surprised how well I played. It was fun. I had to beat some good golfers and I did it.”
